Crystal Bowl Notes Explained: Which Note Does What?
One of the first questions people ask when choosing a crystal singing bowl is: which note should I get?
It is a great question, and the answer involves a bit of music theory, a lot of felt experience, and a connection to the body's energetic anatomy.
Here is a guide to crystal bowl notes and what each one is associated with.
The basics: notes and chakras
Crystal singing bowls are tuned to the seven notes of the Western musical scale: C, D, E, F, G, A, and B. In sound healing, these notes are often mapped to the seven main chakras, the energy centres of the body in the yogic and Ayurvedic traditions.
Here is the traditional mapping:
C is the root chakra, located at the base of the spine. It is associated with grounding, safety, and physical foundation. A C bowl produces a deep, stable tone that many people feel literally in their feet and legs.
D is the sacral chakra, in the lower abdomen. Associated with creativity, sensuality, emotion, and flow. The D note has a warmth and movement to it.
E is the solar plexus chakra, in the upper abdomen. Associated with personal power, will, and confidence. E bowls tend to have a bright, clarifying quality.
F is the heart chakra, in the centre of the chest. Associated with love, compassion, grief, and connection. F bowls are beloved by many practitioners for their emotional depth and warmth.
G is the throat chakra. Associated with expression, communication, and truth. G bowls have a clarity and resonance that many find activating for the voice.
A is the third eye chakra, between the brows. Associated with intuition, perception, and inner knowing. A bowls often produce a high, ethereal tone.
B is the crown chakra, at the top of the head. Associated with spiritual connection and transcendence. B bowls tend to produce the highest tones in a set.
Does this mean I need all seven?
Not at all. Many practitioners build their sets slowly over time, starting with one or two bowls and adding as they develop their practice and their ear.
A C and F combination, root and heart, is a deeply powerful and complementary pairing that works beautifully for a wide range of intentions.
Trust your body
The note that resonates with you physically and emotionally is often the right one. If you have the opportunity to hear several bowls, pay attention to which one you feel in your body rather than just hear with your ears.
